Lukaku has been dropped from Chelsea’s matchday squad for Sunday’s game against Liverpool following his interview in which he expressed unhappiness with his situation at Stamford Bridge and also revealed his desire to return to Inter Milan at some point in the future.

Nevin, who played for Chelsea between 1983 and 1988, took issue with Lukaku’s comments, especially with regard to the 28-year-old’s claim regarding manager Thomas Tuchel changing the team’s system.

Lukaku returned to Chelsea last summer in a £97.5million move but Nevin stressed that the Belgium international shouldn’t expect the club to change for him.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Nevin said: ‘Some of the phrases from the interview really jumped out, such as, ‘You’ve really changed the style, the system’… what? Where? I’ve not seen it. It’s 3-4-3 or a 3-4-1-2 and that’s how Chelsea have played under Thomas Tuchel the entire time.

‘If Romelu Lukaku wants Chelsea to change to suit him, that’s not great news for them seen as they won the Champions League without him. He’s not creating or scoring as many goals as Reece James is, by the way. I know he cost a lot of money, but he’s just another player.’

Lukaku started well after rejoining Chelsea as he scored three goals in three league games at the beginning of the campaign. However, he then went four league matches without a goal prior to suffering an injury. He also had a spell out of the side because of Covid-19.

In an interview with Sky Italia, Lukaku commented on his situation at Chelsea, saying: ‘Physically I am fine. But I’m not happy with the situation at Chelsea.

‘Tuchel has chosen to play with another system – I won’t give up, I’ll be professional. I am not happy with the situation but I am professional – and I can’t give up now.’

Lukaku Also Expressed His Desire To Eventually Return To Inter Milan

He said: ‘I really, genuinely from the bottom of my heart hope to come back to Inter, not at the end of my career, but while I am still at the level to win more trophies.’

Tuchel was left frustrated with Lukaku’s comments. Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Liverpool, he said: ‘I don’t like it because it brings noise we don’t need. We need a calm environment and focus, and it does not help.

‘On the other side, we don’t want to make it more than it actually is.’

‘This is today’s world, and everything you say is out there in public if you are such a big player like Romelu, — he is an experienced player and should know what kind of value it has when he speaks out like this.’

Tuchel added that he was ‘surprised’ by Lukaku’s interview. He continued: ‘This is today’s world, and everything you say is out there in public if you are such a big player like Romelu, — he is an experienced player and should know what kind of value it has when he speaks out like this.’

‘You will find not a lot of system changes if any.

‘Romelu played when he came, he got injured, caught Covid and he played with no training.

‘That’s why I’m surprised. I don’t enter in these discussions like there’s something going on because there is absolutely zero going on.
