The President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari in his independence day speech to Nigerians says the ban on Twitter had been lifted.
More so that the recent events have shown that the social media platform serves as means for information dissemination he added.
Although many users of Twitter had misused it to coordinate, organize and execute activities that are criminal and propagation of fake news, and also had been used to promote ethnic and religious sentiments which was the reason for the ban.
A PRESIDENTIAL COMMITTEE WAS CONSTITUTED
The President also said that “Following the suspension of Twitter operations, Twitter Inc. reach out to the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve the impasse, Furthermore, I constitute Presidential Committee to engage Twitter to explore the possibility of resolving the issue.
The Committee, along with their Technical Team, had engaged with Twitter and had addressed a lot of issues which includes:
- Fair Taxation;
- National Security and Cohesion;
- Registration, Physical presence, and Representation;
- Dispute Resolution; and
- Local Content.
“Following the extensive engagements, they are addressing the issues and I had directed them to lift the suspension but only if they meet the conditions to allow our citizens to continue the use of the platform for business and positive engagements.
The President added that “As a country, we are committed to ensuring digital companies use their platform to enhance the lives of our citizens, respect Nigeria sovereignty, cultural values and promote online safety”
THE REASONS FOR THE SUSPENSION OF TWITTER
The Federal Government of Nigeria suspended Twitter operations in the country on the 5th of June, 2021.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed announced the suspension “for the sake of the persistent use of the platform for activities that were capable of undermining Nigeria corporate existence”
That the suspension will allow the Government to put measures in place so as to address some challenges.
The decision from the Nigeria Government came days after Twitter deleted one of the tweets of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari which he posted on his personal Twitter account @MBuhari.
President Muhammadu Buhari posted a thread of tweets where he addressed insecurity challenges in the country.
The President in his tweet issued a serious warning to those who want to destroy the country and burn down national assets, “ that rude shock awaits them very soon”
The Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed had directed the National Broadcasting Commission to start the process begin license all OTT and Social Media operations in Nigeria.
In another development, Twitter social media company had said President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet violates Twitter Rules.
